Title: Fire Coordinator

Purpose: To assist the eight volunteer fire departments with grant acquisition, centralize record keeping, coordinate appropriate training, and act as a liaison between the Board of County Commissioners and the Volunteer Fire Departments.
Employee Status: The Fire Coordinator shall be hired by the County Coordinator with concurrence of the Board of County Commissioners. The Fire Coordinator shall be responsible to the County Coordinator. 
  • Maintain records and documentation for each Volunteer Fire Department.  Including, but not limited to, drivers list for County Vehicle insurance, equipment/resource inventories, personnel training records, equipment test reports and inspection paperwork.
  • Prepare a monthly fire response call report for presentation to the Madison County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC). 
  • Attend monthly Fire Board meetings, publish agendas and keep minutes of meetings.
  • Recruit volunteers for the local volunteer fire departments and promote retention.
  • Responsible for writing, obtaining and administering grants and other financial aid.
  • Organize and purchase requested equipment in bulk for all departments. 
  • Prepare bids and negotiate with vendors. 
  • Schedule training and provide training as a certified instructor. 
  • Schedule and coordinate pump and ladder test. 
  • Develop uniform Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Standard Operation Guidelines (SOGs) for Madison County Fire Departments. 
  • Assist Volunteer Fire Departments with annual fire protection budgets for presentation to the Madison County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC).
  • Maintain contracts for service between municipalities, volunteer fire departments, & Madison BOCC.
  • Assist Volunteer Fire Departments with ISO rating information and surveys by ISO.
  • Develop and maintain the 5 year fire protection budget and work plan on an annual basis.
  • Assist with County Fire Assessment Study, completed every 5 years. 
  • Work as a liaison for the Fire Board with the BOCC and the general public. 
  • Assist in developing regional relationships and/or agreements with neighboring counties for mutual aid and communication issues. 
  • Respond to news media for interviews and/or incident information. 
  • Prepare news releases for appropriate incidents. 
  • Maintain positive relationships with local and regional media personnel. 
  • Assist with any problems that may occur that need to be brought to the attention of the Madison BOCC. 
  • Assist Emergency Management during disasters and help coordinate Volunteer Fire Department response. 
  • Assist with firefighting as needed. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the County Coordinator
